TIM LI ART

artist specializing in New Zealand aquatic fauna

graphite drawings and limited edition prints

Drawing has been a way for Tim to pay homage to the beauty and unique characteristics our New Zealand fish species hold.

Pāua shells adorned with algal growth, kingfish, orange roughy, albacore tuna and tāmure are just a few of the oceanic objects Li has etched in glorious graphite detail. He hopes that these patiently constructed designs, available as both originals and limited edition prints, engender a respect and admiration for our shared marine environs.

Each drawing, produced on archival grade fine art paper, takes upwards of 150 hours and is meticulously rendered with truth and sincerity. A selection of drawings are digitized to 600dpi at Wellington’s New Zealand Micrographic Services. From there, limited edition fine art prints are produced by local company Picaflor Fine Art Printing.

Gyotaku fish prints

Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese art form which involves inking up physical fish and carefully applying rice paper to the surface to register an image. The resulting print is an accurate recording of shape, size and texture, with every print a unique original holding it’s own intricacies, variations and aesthetics. The honesty of the process captures all the imperfections, the irregular scale patterns, blemishes and marks that are unique to that one fish.

Have you caught a memorable fish of a lifetime? Feel free to contact Tim to have your unique fish recorded using this unique art discipline.
